Shmorl’s Hernia

Shmorl’s hernia is a kind of backbone disk hernia. It is obliged by the name to the scientist, who described it. Intervertebral hernia of Shmorl essentially differs from other disk hernias. Usually it means a displacement of intervertebral disk to the spinal channel, infringement and inflammation of nerves roots. At Shmorl’s hernia the intervertebral disk or its parts are pressed into bone above – or underlying vertebra.

Shmorl’s hernia at children’s and junior age is diagnosed at rapid growth. Osseous structures of vertebrae grow more slowly than soft tissues; pressure upon backbone is enlarged. There are other reasons: osteoporosis when durability of bone tissue decreases and disk is easily pressed into vertebra body. Shmorl’s hernias arise also at scoliosis, lifting weight, kicks, jumps, hard physical work.

Multiple hernias of Shmorl are more often observed. They affect some vertebrae and disks, are located in thoracic or lumbar department. In cervical department Shmorl’s hernias is not met.

The patient complains of moderate loin and back pain. It appears after exercise stresses or long walking, disappears after rest.

Shmorl’s hernia is rather dangerous. These are backbone micro traumas; they can lead to fractures of vertebrae.

Anti-inflammatory ointments help to get rid of painful feelings. The treatment is focused on physiotherapy exercises. When performing exercises back muscles become stronger, intervals between vertebrae extend. But it isn’t necessary to enlarge an axial load on backbone. Power exercises and acrobatics, run, training on devices are undesirable. Swimming is an optimum sport. Hung on a horizontal bar without pulling up is prescribed.
